Welcome to May

from Sam Sarver

Howdy, howdy, everyone, Welcome to May. Things are moving and quickly and schedules are filling up. As we talked about last month, we’ve been working hard on coordinating with artists on the amazing art and merchandise we’ve been preparing. We’ll be talking about that process more on Atomic Chats and next month’s newsletter. It’s been an exciting time and we still have more to show you!

Things are getting pretty heavy in the Written and the Lost this month, so in lighter news, I can very happily announce that our Audio Comedy Show, O.O.P.S. (Official Oddity Problem Specialists) is now on the Finishing Touches stage! All 11 episodes are put together, fully recorded, sounds effects are all in; at this point, it’s just some minor adjustments. (I’m writing the credits right now, and won’t forget anyone this time...maybe..). I don’t have an exact date for it yet, and we’re putting together a little teaser trailer as well! We’re hopeful it will begin releasing before Tremendicon at the end of this month, so stay tuned for more info. We’ve been working on this project for 5 years! It has gone through a lot of ups and downs, and - thanks to our amazing editor, Luna - it’s very nearly here!

On the note of Tremendicon, a wonderful non-profit convention here in Springfield, MO, we will be selling our merchandise there to start, we will be hosting a panel! (Check out their socials for more details as those release) Of course, Jordy is also planning to run a game or two there, so you can come play some Pathfinder with our illustrious GM. We’re excited to see some of you there!
Atomic Broadcasting Design by Lance Sawyer, 2026
The above image is a different take on our Atomic Broadcasting logo, which is going to be one of our T-shirt designs - as well as a version with our regular logo. The artist of this design, Lance Sawyer, has been great to work with; we love his stuff. The T-Shirts are planned to be available for sale online before Tremendicon, but again, more info later as we’re still getting all of the intricate business details squared away.

Thank you all; I hope May goes wonderfully for you. We love you all, and have an Atomic-Time!

Cast Corner: Hobbying

from Sam
I have had a lot hobbies. Something that I’ve had trouble with over the years is the social balance of said hobbies. What I mean by that is to say: some hobbies are those of solitude -
you don’t need anyone else to participate, painting and making models, and fully experience/enjoy it - and others that require other people to participate in said hobby - TTRPGs for example (unless of course you are playing a journaling/solo RPG, as those do exist).

I have, over the course of my hobbying, jumped from all social to no social hobbies several times, but I have recently found myself in a nice balance. My main hobbies right now are video games, comics, and Warhammer 40k. (Outside of the podcast, TTRPG play hasn’t really been happening lately). I find all 3 of these have tremendous opportunities within themselves to be very social or not social at all. For video games you choose which game to play, multiplayer, single Player, or both, and if you want to play with friends or strangers. Everyday when booting up the hobby you choose how much you want to socialize.

With Warhammer, a majority of the time you are at home, building models and painting them,. This takes hours upon hours. During this process you can choose to build/paint with friends or at a local store/hang out location, and the when time comes to play the game part of the hobby, you do require another participant. However, this is a hobby where a large portion of people who buy the models don’t actually play the game. They just build and paint. They take parts from multiple boxes and make unique models (kitbashing); they find relaxation in the art.

Now with comic books, this is a very unsocial hobby that allows you to be social with other peoplw about it. The act of participating in the hobby is reading the books. It’s hard to read with another person (but not impossible, as my wife and I have done this) but it is very solo focused. The social aspect comes from you seeking out people who also like the hobby
who will talk with you. I find this much harder than the other hobbies. The stores are not usually places to hang out long periods of time, online communities are tough to find, but reading has always been a wonderful hobby and its unsocial nature is nice.

Now, I’m not saying social or unsocial is better than the other. What I encourage is to find a
good balance in your life. Whether you’re more extroverted or introverted, it is still healthy to balance the social levels. It is wonderful to have hobbies that let you get together with friends and be creative and fun together. Some find this more taxing than others. It’s also great to be able to get home and settle in for some time alone with a hobby. But I’ve always found my mental state is worse if I lean into one over the other. Right now, I play a lot of video games such as Dead by Daylight with friends. It has some longer wait times between matches, and I use that time to slide over to my desk and work on my building/painting of Warhammer figures (sometimes causing me to miss the start of the game). A kind of mix between social levels for me that works well.

So, what I encourage is for you to evaluate your hobbies, reflect on them. If you find you are
leaning very heavily into one social level over the other, allow yourself some time to think on that. Is there a hobby you’ve been interested in but would require you to break from routine and social times? Maybe give that a try, and you may find it improves a lot, even if you don’t feel improvement is even needed, or maybe you already have a great balance. It can be helpful reflect on that as well.
Thanks for supporting us in any way you can.
We love the community that we are seeing grow, and we hope to see more and more of you!

All our love to you and yours,
